It's nice to compare the field marks. The one I saw was actually being trailed by an Anna's hummingbird that takes advantage of the sap wells for an easy meal.

That photo of the sapsucker "falling off" his perch is hilarious! I guess it makes sense it would happen, but to be there to see it AND capture the photo is priceless.Monikahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10442975942250078450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010921422659089253.post-69634618626415734522010-01-08T14:24:02.810-05:002010-01-08T14:24:02.810-05:00Wonderful photos and beautiful rendition of the sa...Wonderful photos and beautiful rendition of the sapsucker. They are basically gone from our neighborhood until spring. And I love the evidence that they feed on berries. Winter berry eaters in the the north gorge on fermented fruit, and get drunk - literally.Chris Petrakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05637163831402534158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010921422659089253.post-38020196483519477752010-01-08T14:00:02.791-05:002010-01-08T14:00:02.791-05:00Vickie, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker images are GR...Vickie, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker images are GRANDE! I love them and they show the personality of that bird so well. Yes, I do believe they do miss and also loose their balance sometimes. How great that they venture so close to your home. We have them, but they do not come in so close, until maybe one day when my Holly bushes grow a bit larger. Beautiful watercolour rendering, jusy beautiful! I so much enjoy your art~Mary Howell Cromerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05473298562829352582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010921422659089253.post-12160315771922695582010-01-08T09:47:21.722-05:002010-01-08T09:47:21.722-05:00Vicki, I love seeing "behind the scenes"...Vicki, I love seeing "behind the scenes" as artwork is created. I watched one at my in-laws house the other day making rings around the tree. I was no more than 5 ft from this guy, but I didn't have a camera with me. Missed a great opportunity. Guess it pays to wear it around your neck all the time!Guy and Jo Annahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01589182852911752284noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010921422659089253.post-84108618938314146442010-01-08T01:17:42.766-05:002010-01-08T01:17:42.766-05:00Beautiful sketch Vicky, and wonderful photographs ...Beautiful sketch Vicky, and wonderful photographs catching him with the berry in his mouth!
